DIY & DECORATING
New cupboard handles. A fresh feel for your kitchen.
If your cupboards are sound, new handles or knobs can give them a different feel. Start with the existing holes and the way the doors open, then choose a finish you will enjoy using.

Measure the holes, not the whole handle
For a handle with two screws, measure from the centre of one fixing hole to the centre of the other. This fixing-centre distance is different from the handle’s overall length. Take the old handle off if needed to measure accurately, and check more than one door or drawer.
A knob often uses one hole, but its base, projection and screw specification still matter. Compare a dimensioned drawing with the cupboard, rather than assuming all knobs use the same screw.
The measurements worth keeping
| Measurement | What to check |
|---|---|
| Fixing centres | Match the existing holes if you want a straightforward replacement. |
| Overall length and base footprint | Check the handle covers old marks without colliding with another feature. |
| Projection and grip space | Make sure fingers fit comfortably and the handle does not catch the adjacent door or appliance. |
| Door or drawer-front thickness | Check the required screw or bolt type and usable length for that thickness. |
| Quantity | Count doors and drawers separately, including any different handle sizes. |
Choose for how it feels as well as how it looks
A slim bar, a cup pull and a round knob work differently in the hand. Think about the largest drawer, wet hands and anyone who finds a small grip uncomfortable. Where possible, try one sample on a frequently used door before ordering for the whole kitchen.
Check the finish beside hinges, taps and appliances, but do not feel you must match every metal perfectly. Read the care information. Some finishes change with use, and a cleaning product suitable for one finish may damage another.
Keep the replacement simple
Matching existing hole centres usually makes the job more manageable. If you want to change from two-hole handles to knobs, or to a new fixing distance, you may need to fill and refinish old holes or drill new ones accurately. Consider how that repair will look on the existing door finish.
Try the first replacement with the correct fixings and a suitable screwdriver. Check it is secure and opens comfortably before changing the rest. Avoid overtightening: the door material, fixing and handle can all be damaged. Follow the supplied instructions and use appropriate support if making new holes.
Order a sample before the whole set
A single handle or knob lets you check hole spacing, screw length, grip, projection and finish on the actual cupboard. Check sample costs and returns terms; do not assume a bespoke or made-to-order item can be returned.
Handles or knobs?
Handles give a longer grip and need their stated fixing-centre spacing. A knob can be a simpler shape with one fixing point, but may not cover the marks left by a handle. You can use different shapes on doors and drawers if their finishes and proportions work together.

A few questions before you start
Are replacement handle sizes standard?
Some fixing-centre sizes are common, but there is no single size for every cupboard. Measure the existing holes and compare the exact product dimensions.
Can I reuse the screws?
Only if the type, diameter and length are compatible with the new fitting and the door. Follow the supplied specification; do not force a screw that does not fit.
Will a new handle cover old marks?
That depends on its base and footprint as well as the old finish. Check with one sample before ordering all the replacements.
If you would like help fitting the handles, or the cupboards need a wider update, our kitchen work guide can help you describe the job and compare what is included.
