Start with the fixing you already have
A knob usually uses one fixing hole; a pull handle often uses two. Before ordering, remove one existing fitting and check the hole, cupboard thickness, screw length and any marks underneath. Keep the old fixing safe so you can compare it with the new product’s instructions.
Changing a two-hole handle to a knob usually leaves a second hole to deal with. A suitable backplate might cover it, but check the exact dimensions and finish. Filling and repainting may be another option. If you want to reuse both holes, our cupboard handle guide explains how to measure the centres.
Four measurements to keep beside you
| Check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Existing hole and fixing | The supplied screw and fixing must suit the hole and the cupboard material. Do not assume every knob takes the same thread. |
| Door or drawer-front thickness | Check the required screw length, including any backplate. A screw that is too long or too short can prevent a secure fit. |
| Knob size and projection | Think about the grip, any marks you want covered, and how far the fitting will stand out. |
| Clearance around the cupboard | Check adjacent doors, drawers, walls and appliances through their full opening movement. |
Choose a shape you will enjoy using
Round, oval, mushroom and faceted shapes each give a cupboard a different feel. Look at the size as well as the picture: a small decorative knob can feel very different from a larger one when you open a heavy drawer. Think about who uses the room and whether the shape leaves enough room for a comfortable grip.
For a kitchen, consider cleaning as well as appearance. Check the material, coating and care instructions for the exact fitting, especially around heat, moisture or cleaning products. Brass-coloured finishes, for example, can have different underlying materials and care needs.
Knobs, handles, or a mix?
| Option | A useful starting point |
|---|---|
| Knobs | Often suit a single existing fixing hole and a smaller visual detail. Check grip, projection and fixing requirements. |
| Pull handles | Often use two holes and can offer a different grip on a wider drawer or heavier door. Match the hole centres if reusing the existing holes. |
| A mix | You might use knobs on doors and pulls on drawers. Compare the finish, proportions and practical feel before ordering the full set. |
Try one before changing the whole kitchen
If practical, order a single fitting first. Check it on a real door or drawer, in your own light, and with the cupboard fully open and closed. Count every position before placing a larger order. Current prices, stock, delivery and returns are shown by the shopping site.
Fit carefully and keep the old hardware
- Check the new fitting’s instructions and supplied fixings against the cupboard thickness.
- Protect the surface and support the door or drawer while you work.
- Use suitable tools, keep the fitting aligned and avoid overtightening against the finish.
- Check that the fitting is secure and the door or drawer moves freely.
- Keep the old knobs and screws together, especially if you rent or may want to restore the cupboards.
If the fixing is damaged, the front is fragile or new holes are needed, decide whether a suitable tradesperson should do that part. A replacement fitting cannot correct an unsuitable or damaged mounting point.
A few questions before you start
Can I replace a handle with a knob?
Sometimes, but a two-hole handle can leave an unused hole and marks. Check backplate options or the finishing work required before buying.
Are cupboard knob screws all the same?
No. Confirm the thread, length and fixing method for the product you choose and the thickness of your cupboard front.
Should I use the same knob on every cupboard?
You can, but check the size, grip and clearance at each position. A larger drawer or awkward corner may need a different practical choice.
