How to describe your job

Start with what you would like done or the problem you have noticed. For example: “I would like the garden weeded and the hedge trimmed” or “The kitchen tap keeps dripping”.

Say where the work is, when you would like it done and anything that may affect access. You can add details as you speak to the tradesperson. They can ask questions and advise on the work needed.

If you are unsure which service to choose, browse the job descriptions or try a short search such as plumber, cleaner or roof repair.

What to look for in a quote

Check that each quote covers the work you want. Ask what is included in the total price, such as materials, VAT, taking away waste and repairs or decoration afterwards.

For a regular service, such as cleaning or gardening, agree how often someone will visit and what they will do each time. For a bigger project, ask about the main stages and how long it is likely to take.

If something is unclear, ask the person to explain it before you decide. A useful quote should be easy to understand.

What to check before booking

Look for relevant experience and ask about insurance, qualifications or registration where the work needs them. Photos of similar jobs and recent customer feedback can help you decide who suits the job.

Keep the agreed work, price, payment dates and any guarantee in writing. Ask how you will agree changes or extra costs if something unexpected comes up.
