Make a useful list of the jobs
Small jobs are easier to price when the person coming knows what each one involves. “Put up two shelves in the study” is a better starting point than “a few things around the house”. Give each person the same list, with the most important jobs first.
- Name the room and the job, with approximate dimensions or the number of items.
- Say whether you have bought the shelves, furniture, handles or other fittings, and whether all parts and instructions are available.
- Mention access, stairs, parking and any times when the work needs to be quiet.
- Keep photos ready to share when you speak to the tradesperson, especially for repairs or awkward spaces.
- Flag anything that needs checking before work can be priced, such as the wall construction or a damaged fitting.
What can affect a handyman quote?
A visit may be priced for the whole job, by the hour or with a minimum charge. Ask which applies and how any extra time is agreed. The time needed to prepare, collect materials, work safely and tidy up matters as well as the fitting itself.
A longer list can sometimes be dealt with in one visit, but it helps to say which jobs must be finished if time runs short. Do not assume every person offers the same range of skills: ask them to confirm what they can take on.
An example: three jobs in one visit
Your list might be to assemble one flat-pack bookcase, fit two shelves and replace six kitchen handles. For the bookcase, confirm that all the parts are present. For the shelves, give their size and intended use and ask the tradesperson to check the wall and suitable fixings. For the handles, say whether the new ones match the existing fixing holes.
Ask whether the quote includes fixings, removal of packaging and the full list. If it is based on time, ask for an expected duration and what happens if one job takes longer than anticipated.
Compare the whole visit
- Jobs included: check every task against your list and note any exclusions.
- Labour: a fixed total or time rate, any minimum visit charge and how additional time is approved.
- Materials: who supplies fittings and consumables, and whether collection or delivery is charged.
- The finish: whether filling, touching up paint or other making good is included.
- The total: VAT where applicable, parking or travel charges, and disposal of old items.
When should you use a specialist?
Ask for the right skills for the job, particularly if it involves gas, electrical work or structural changes. A general handyman service should not be assumed to cover these. Describe the work clearly so the person can tell you whether you need a separate specialist.
