Start with your survey or test results
Tell the contractor where the material is, what the report says and what work you are planning. If the material has not been identified, start with an asbestos survey or test.
Keep the material undisturbed
Avoid cutting, breaking or moving suspected asbestos while arranging help. If it has already been disturbed, keep people away from the area and seek specialist advice.
Choosing the right contractor
Most higher-risk asbestos work needs a licensed contractor. Other asbestos work still needs the right training and controls. Ask the contractor to explain which rules apply to this job and check any licence they need. HSE provides guidance on work that needs a licensed contractor.
Useful questions to ask
- What exactly will be removed, and how will the area be protected?
- Does the price include specialist waste transport and disposal?
- Are any independent air tests or clearance checks included where needed?
- What paperwork will I receive when the work is complete?
- Who will repair or redecorate the area afterwards?
Agree the whole job before it starts
The written quote should explain the work, safety arrangements, waste removal and any extra charges. Ask who will arrange required notifications and checks. Agree how any unexpected material or additional work will be discussed and priced.
Asbestos waste needs specialist handling and must be kept separate from ordinary waste. Ask for the disposal arrangements and records. HSE has further asbestos safety guidance.
