Get free quotes for asbestos surveys and testing
Worried that a material may contain asbestos, or planning work in an older property? A surveyor can inspect the relevant areas, arrange testing and explain the findings.

Start with the property and your plans
Tell the surveyor which areas concern you and whether you are planning repairs, refurbishment or demolition. Share any existing report. The surveyor can explain which type of survey or testing you need.
Leave suspect materials undisturbed
Avoid drilling, sanding, scraping or breaking material to find out what it is. If work has uncovered something suspicious, stop disturbing it and ask a qualified specialist for advice. Photographs should be taken without touching the material.
Which survey do you need?
- A management survey helps identify and manage asbestos during normal use of a building.
- A refurbishment or demolition survey checks the areas affected by planned building work. It can involve opening up parts of the building, so the surveyor should explain access and disruption.
- Testing a sample can identify a particular material. Ask whether a wider survey is needed for the work you have planned.
HSE explains the different asbestos surveys. Ask the surveyor to recommend the right one for your property and plans.
Useful questions to ask
- Which rooms and areas will you inspect?
- Are samples, laboratory testing and the written report included?
- When will I receive the results, and will you explain the next steps?
- What training, experience and accreditation do you have?
Before you book
Agree the areas to inspect, any access limits and the full price, including extra samples or return visits. Ask which laboratory will analyse samples. HSE recommends using an appropriately accredited survey organisation where possible; see its survey guidance.
Finding asbestos does not always mean it has to be removed. Ask the surveyor to explain what the condition and your planned work mean for the next step. If removal is recommended, see asbestos removal.
